Hi,

Goto onelist.com.

Pranav

My geometry teacher was sometimes acute, and sometimes
obtuse, but always, he was right.

Hi Amitabh,

eGroups have merged with OneList recently. Check out their site at
http://www.egroups.com for everything about starting your own list and
managing it.

If you have computing resources and need help in
* selecting
* installing
* managing a list managing software
you will need to research the net. If that is the case try sending Vani a
mail off the list. I am sure she will respond :-).

Good luck,
~Vamsi

Hello Amitabh,

SHORTCUT ANSWER :
there are sites like egroups.com which enable one to run lists for free.

MORE DETAILED ANSWER :
In general, actually making a list is very simple - you just have to use
some ready-made list software or the other - no programming or technical
knowledge required. But before that, there are a few things you have to be
aware of:

Firstly, just like in setting up a website, one should first see what kind
of a mailing list one wants. Things to consider : 1. Kind of list - there
are mainly two kinds of lists
 a) Announcement - the newsletter kinds, where the list
 owner/administrator only posts mails, members/subscribers
 just receive.
 eg. the list [email protected]
 b) Discussion - where subscribers can also post
 eg. this list itself
2. Estimated membership volume - how many subscribers do you expect you
will need to cater to 3. Frequency of mails: If it is an announcement
list, how many "issues" do you want to send in a given period, say per
month, per week If it is discussion, what kind of mail traffic do you
expect

Secondly, apart from how you run the list, the quality of your list
will also depend immensely on:
1. which list server software is used to run the list -
effects the ease of use for the administrator and subscribers, amount of
additional administration the admin is saved from (as an example, one
feature of Lyris, a list server software, namely "failsafe unsubscribe"
alone saves the admin from a lot of overhead administration and the
subscribers from irritation. 2. reliability and support of the server on
which your list will run 3. how much control you have over your list as
owner/administrator These should be kept in mind when deciding which
server/list-hosting-service you want to run your list on.

There are services which host lists for free - you have to see whether
they fulfill your requirement.

Apart from that we at Manaskriti offer list hosting services to enable
people to run lists, so you can contact me privately if you want.

Let me know if you require any further details

Regards

Vani Murarka
